What is Candida?

Candida is a yeast fungus that normally lives in the body without causing any problems. It is found on the skin and in the moist mucous membranes such as in the intestines, mouth, throat and vagina, as part of our normal body flora. Under certain conditions the yeast becomes overgrown and then becomes a fungal infection known as candidiasis, such as if the skin becomes broken, when taking antibiotics or if you have diabetes or a weakened immune system.

What is Candidiasis (thrush)?

Candidiasis is an infection with the yeast fungus Candida albicans, also known as thrush. The most common Candida infections are:
  • Oropharyngeal Candidiasis or oral thrush (mouth and throat) with symptoms including white patches on the tongue and soreness when swallowing
  • Vaginal Candidiasis or thrush of the vagina with symptoms including itching, burning sensation, and a white cheese-like discharge
  • Cutaneous Candidiasis or candida infection of the skin and nails with symptoms including crumbling nails, red scaly itchy patches of skin, such as between the toes or in folds of skin.

What is the Intestinal Microflora?

The normal intestinal or gut microflora is made up of many microorganisms including bacteria that help with the digestion of our food, and the yeast fungus Candida albicans, one of the microorganisms that live in balance with the gut community, doing no harm but providing no benefit, known as commensalism. Other microorganisms play a role in helping maintain the integrity of the gut wall and protecting against harmful pathogens. It is well recognised that a healthy gut flora is important for overall health and wellness and depends on a balance between microorganisms that are beneficial and those that are harmful. When the balance is tipped then microorganisms that are beneficial become displaced by the overgrowth of harmful microorganisms, which results in an infection or in other symptoms such as bloating, digestive disturbance and may cause more serious problems like irritable bowel disease. Factors that can tip the balance include poor diet, alcohol, stress, antibiotics and some medications1.

What are the Ingredients of Kolorex?

Horopito (Pseudowintera colorata):

Horopito is an ancient evergreen shrub belonging to the Winteraceae family and native to New Zealand. It is also known as pepperwood due to the spicy taste of its leaves. For hundreds of years, Horopito has been used a traditional medicinal herb the indigenous Maori for skin diseases, including fungal infection and digestive problems, and the leaves were chewed for toothache. Early European settles also used Horopito for medicinal purposes such as for stomach ache2. This unique New Zealand herb is now grown organically by Forest Herbs Research, a Nelson-based private company dedicated to the production of Horopito as a medicinal herb for treatment and prevention of Candida infections. Horopito plants vary in their antifungal activity and the extract used for Kolorex is made from only the most active strain, which are leaves containing red margins2, 3.

Antifungal properties

The leaves of the Horopito plant contain many bioactive compounds including terpenes, particularly polygodial, a sesquiterpene dialdehyde. The highest concentrations of polygodial were found in the red margined leaves2, 3. The extract used for Kolorex is prepared as an oleoresin, which is a combination of oil and resin that contains a highly concentrated amounts of polygloidal and exists in liquid form2. Extracts of Horopito leaves containing polygloidal were investigated for their antifungal activity and found to be effective against the yeast fungus Candida albicans that causes candidiasis or thrush4,also against other fungal pathogens4, 5. The antifungal activity of polygloidal was investigate and found to be primarily due to disruption of the fungal cell membrane causing it to leak its intracellular contents resulting in fungal cell death6, 7.

Clinical studies

Studies in women with recurrent vaginal candidiasis demonstrated that Kolorex is equally effective as the antifungal medication itraconazole, as a treatment for reducing symptoms of candidiasis and preventing further infections by eliminating the yeast. Kolorex was also found to be more effective than itraconazole as maintenance treatment in preventing relapses8, 9.
