What is UMF?

The Unique Manuka Factor (UMF®) is a registered trademark for a grading system that ensures a Manuka honey product originates from the nectar of the Manuka bush, Leptospermum scoparium, which is indigenous to New Zealand. Manuka honey that has been given a UMF grade is guaranteed as genuine with certified purity and quality, and contains the unique signature compounds characteristic of this honey. These are natural key markers of Manuka honey and include leptosperin, DHA (dihydroxyacetone) and methylglyoxal that are identified using scientific methods and contribute to the unique health promoting properties of Manuka honey. The amount of leptosperin is consistent in all UMF grades of Manuka honey at 100mg/kg. However the amount of methylglyoxal increases and in UMF® 10+ Manuka Honey the methylglyoxal level is least 182 mg/kg.

For more information see Unique Manuka Factor (UMF) on the next tab.

Caution:

Do not give UMF® 8+ Manuka Honey to a baby under one year of age. This is because there is a small risk with any honey that it may contain spores of the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, which can germinate in the immature intestine of a young child and cause infant botulism, a bacterial infection of the intestines. Risk of botulism from honey is only a problem for the immature intestine. Once mature, the intestines can prevent Clostridium spreading and causing botulism.
