Birch Leaf (Betula pendula)
Silver birch is a tree native to Europe and Asia and Birch Leaf has long been used in traditionalmedicine of Eastern Europe for its diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties, particularly for cystitis. Recent studies have shown that extract of Birch Leaf inhibits the activity of the enzyme xanthine oxidase, which is responsible for causing a build-up of uric acid crystal in the blood and can lead to gout and kidney stones. Endopeptidase is an enzyme found in extract of Birch Leaf that breaks down proteins and also influences blood pressure and kidney function and is thought to contribute to the diuretic properties of Birch Leaf1, 2. Birch Leaf also contain high levels of phenolic compounds which are thought to contribute to its antioxidant properties and is also rich in minerals and other nutrients3, 4.
Golden Rod (Solidago virgaurea)
Golden Rod is a flowering plant belonging to the Asteraceae family and grows in many open spaces around the world such as in meadows, prairies and savannah grasslands. Golden Rod has been used in traditional herbal medicine for treating problems with the bladder, urinary tract and kidneys due to its diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties and is particularly helpful for cystitis. Golden Rod extract contains many bioactive compounds including phenolic glycosides like leiocarposide, flavonoids and terpenoids, which are thought to contribute to its diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties. Animal studies have demonstrated that extract of Golden Rod has diuretic activity and also decreases excretion of potassium and sodium from the urine5, 6,7.
Horsetail (Equisetum arvense)
Horsetail is a prehistoric plant that is a descendent from the Palaeozoic era 400 million years ago. It is found throughout Europe, Asia and North America and into the Arctic Circle. Since ancient times, horsetail has been used in traditional medicine to stop bleeding, heal wounds and treat kidney and bladder problems. Extract of horsetail is rich in bioactive chemicals including alkaloids, triterpenoids, flavonoids, phenolics and tanins and has a high mineral content. Many biological properties have been found in Horsetail extract including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory antibacterial and diuretic properties8, 9, 10. A clinical study demonstrated that extract of Horsetail had a significant diuretic effect on healthy volunteers and was comparable to the diuretic medicine hydrochlorothiazide11.
Nettle (Urtica dioica)
Nettle, also known as the stinging nettle, is a perennial flowering plant belonging to the Urticaceae family. It has been used in traditional medicine to treat many ailments including rheumatism, gout and kidney stones and is considered an important cleansing herb. The leaves are rich in vitamins, minerals and other nutrients; also many bioactive compounds and they have healing and antioxidant properties12, 13. Animal studies have demonstrated that extract of Nettle has diuretic properties and also increases the excretion of sodium by the kidneys14.
Raspberry leaf (Rubus idaeus)
The Raspberry plant is a perennial plant with edible fruit that is native to Europe and Norther Asia. The leaf of the Raspberry plant has been used in traditional medicine mainly to support a healthy pregnancy. Extract of Raspberry leaf is rich in bioactive compounds including flavonoids, tannins and other nutrients. In contemporary herbal medicine Raspberry leaf is also used for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties15, 16.
What are the Contraindications/Interactions of Kidney Cleanse Tea?
Use with caution:
- If you are pregnant as several of the ingredients may be toxic if over used
- If you are taking quinidine medicines for irregular heartbeat as raspberry leaf can increase its blood concentration
There are no documented herb-drug interactions within the recommended dosage. However, you should always check the ingredients for known allergies and to ensure you do not have any allergies or sensitivities to these ingredients. What are the Directions for using Kidney Cleanse Tea?
Shake the can before opening as the contents may settle. Add one level teaspoon of Kidney Cleanse Tea (equivalent to 1g) per cup (150ml) and infuse with boiling water for 5-10 minutes.
Dosage for acute (short-term) use:
Use three times daily for one to two weeks.Adults:

Children:
4-10 years: 50-100mls
1-4 years: 20-40ml
Babies:
6-12 months: 10ml
0-6 months: 5ml
For long-term use for prevention and upkeep:
Adults
Use once daily: 1 cup
Children:

Note:
For babies, administer via a sterilised dropper.
For best results:

Special Instructions
Do not microwave your Kidney Cleanse Tea after infusing. Close the can immediately after use to avoid external contamination and keep away from heat and moisture. Store in the fridge in hot and humid climates.
